Hello, book lovers! 💕
This list kind of fits with the whole of 2020, considering the entire year was disappointing. But it’s finally time to do my end-of-the-year posts, which I’m excited about! I’m so glad that this year is almost done; it’s one that I don’t want to think about after it’s over.
I want to start off by saying that these are books that I gave 3 stars. It doesn’t mean that I absolutely hated them or that they were terrible books. It’s just that when I finished reading them, I felt underwhelmed. There aren’t many books on this list, mainly because most of the books I read this year I really enjoyed (which will make picking a top favorite kind of hard).
I’m not going to go too much into what the books are about because if I have a review of a book, I’ll link it to the book so you can read my thoughts on a specific book if you’re interested.
So without any further ado, let’s get onto my most disappointing books of 2020!
These aren’t in any particular order. And some of these might be controversial being that they are pretty popular. Again, these aren’t bad books; I just wasn’t blown away by the end of reading them. I also don’t remember reading some of these books, which is another part of why they’re on this list.
This is probably going to be controversial because I know it’s a lot of people’s favorite book. But hear me out. I listened to this on audiobook, and I had some trouble understanding the narrator (who did the audiobook for The Hate U Give by Angie Thomas, which I loved). So I feel like I might need to reread it, especially if I’m going to continue on in the series.
Skyward by Brandon Sanderson
I don’t have a review for this book, and honestly it’s one that I forgot that I read this year. But that’s because I read it back in January, and this year has been such shit that I can’t remember anything from that long ago. Anyway, this is a sci-fi book, which might be part of the reason I didn’t enjoy it that much. I’m not usually a big fan of sci-fi.
I remember thinking that this book fell flat for me with the Twitter war. I know that that was a majority of the story, so it was supposed to take up a majority of the story. But it felt unnecessarily drawn out. It also felt predictable because I mean, it’s a YA contemporary. I’ve read a lot of books in that genre, and I kind of feel like I’m outgrowing it.
This book was the reason I wrote the post for outgrowing genres, in particular YA contemporary. I used to really like Kasie West, but this book felt really juvenile to me. Granted, it’s about a teenage girl, so I can’t entirely relate to the issues that the characters were going through. But the main character was always arguing about something, and the mystery aspect felt anticlimactic when it was revealed.
I’ve read a majority of Sandhya Menon’s book, and I really enjoyed those. But something about this one didn’t stick with me. It didn’t wow me by the time I finished reading. Honestly, I don’t remember much about this book; I know it’s a retelling of Beauty and the Beast, but other than that, it could be like I didn’t even read the book. I didn’t really connect with the characters that much.
This wasn’t what I was expecting going into it. I knew that it was a romance between the main character and the headmaster of a boarding school. But it was a majority of the book. Like the sex scenes were 90% of the story, and it was a short book. I don’t normally mind some steamy scenes, especially in a romance, but not when it’s the entire book. It was almost cringey at how much of the story it took up. The only thing that redeemed this book for me was the mystery, which is what I was reading it for.
So there you have it. Those are the books that disappointed me the most this year. Like I’ve said, it doesn’t mean that they’re bad books or that I didn’t like them at all. They just weren’t my favorite out of the books I read this year.
Did you read any of these books? What were your thoughts on them? Were you disappointed by them as well? I’d love to chat in the comments below!
